If your story is listed below in the top 5, congratulations on advancing to the 2nd Round kicking off at 11:59PM EDT this Thursday, March 17th!  Regardless if your story placed or not, everyone should be proud for rising to the challenge and creating an original story from scratch in just 8 days.  This was our largest field ever and there were many great stories that aren't recognized below.  Thank you to everyone for participating, we hope it was an inspiring experience!

#1 'Dumb Dog' by Heather Ringo SYNOPSIS - Struggling with PTSD from his time as an IED detecting dog handler in Afghanistan, a combat veteran finally takes his therapistís advice to walk shelter dogs as a form of exposure therapy. When a falling redwood tree and its resulting power outage causes the dogs to panic and escape into the stormy night, the veteran must not only gather the lost dogs, but also his memories from the war, and, in so doing, discover something about self-forgiveness and the nature of grief.  

#2 'Picking Up' by Rob Bowman SYNOPSIS - A one-night stand turns dangerous when a covert operative is targeted for a hit and has to try and keep his guest safe and, preferably, unaware, leading him to question the futility of his work.

#3 'Unnuk' by Elizabeth Schwandt SYNOPSIS - Unnak, an orphan surviving on the margins of a British expedition camp in 19th century Alaska, has one chance to save his protector, Sir William Fawley. Fawley, wounded by the evil raider Robo during a raid, needs Unnak to take a journey that no man could be expected to survive.

#4 'Bark-Knight' by Brian K. DeLuca SYNOPSIS - As a blackout hits Baltimore a humble dog walker, an injured veteran, finds himself cleaning the streets of a different kind of waste.

#5 'Run' by Shawn Kinghorn SYNOPSIS - Every time they go outside they run, and every time theyíve made it back safe. This time itís worse; this time thereís no light.

#Honorable Mention 'Let's Go' by Malissa Greenwood SYNOPSIS - A power outage sheds new light on an overanxious woman's fears.

#Honorable Mention 'Release ' by Allison deHart SYNOPSIS - Sophia seeks answers and will not stop until she gets them. She hopes the truth will be her release.
